Hyperhidrosis is sweating far beyond what the body needs to regulate its temperature. It usually affects the underarms, the palms or the soles of the feet, and it has nothing to do with hygiene: it shapes what you wear, your work, shaking hands and your social life. On the Costa del Sol, with long hot summers, many people notice it more.
The first step is a medical consultation. Most cases are primary, with no other cause behind them, but sometimes excessive sweating is due to something else, such as a hormonal problem or a medicine, and that has to be ruled out before treating.
When it is indicated, treatment involves injecting neuromodulators into the skin of the affected area, a medicine a doctor gives in small doses that blocks the signal that switches on the sweat glands. The effect is temporary and the treatment is repeated when it wears off.
