What they are

Neuromodulators soften the muscle, not your expression

Neuromodulators are the medicines behind what most people call anti-wrinkle injections. They temporarily reduce the contraction of the muscle they are placed in. In aesthetic medicine they are used in small doses and very precise points to soften the lines that movement creates, without stopping your face from moving.

Wrinkles are not their only use. They can also soften the vertical bands of the neck, sharpen the jawline, balance a smile that lifts more on one side when the cause is muscular, and reduce excessive sweating in the underarms, hands or feet.

They are prescription medicines: only a doctor can decide whether they suit you, choose the dose and give the treatment. The effect starts within a few days, is complete at around two weeks and lasts several months, after which the muscle gradually recovers its strength.

Who it's for

It may make sense if…

  • The lines you make when you frown, raise your eyebrows or smile have started to bother you.
  • Vertical bands show on your neck, or your jawline has lost some definition.
  • Your smile is uneven because one side pulls more than the other.
  • You sweat far more than you need to, and it gets in the way of daily life.

The doctor decides whether it is indicated at the consultation.

The process

How it goes, step by step.

  1. 01

    Medical consultation

We look at how your face moves, go through your medical history and confirm whether treatment is indicated.

  2. 02

    Plan and dose

We agree the points and the lowest dose that gives the result you are after.

  3. 03

    Treatment

A few small injections with very fine needles, in a matter of minutes.

  4. 04

    Review

At around two weeks we check the effect and, if needed, fine-tune it.

Treatments

What we use them for in clinic

Expression lines

Forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet, with a natural result.

Reversible
effect

Anti-wrinkle treatment targets expression lines, also called dynamic wrinkles: the folds that appear when you frown, raise your eyebrows or narrow your eyes to smile. At first they only show with movement and disappear at rest. Over the years, repeated movement and the natural loss of skin elasticity mean they start to stay visible even when your face is relaxed.

The most studied medical treatment for these lines is based on neuromodulators, which temporarily and locally relax the muscle causing the fold. By reducing that repeated contraction, the skin over it smooths out and the lines soften. It is a minimally invasive procedure, performed by a doctor through micro-injections, with a reversible effect that fades on its own over time.

At Rejuvelook we treat it as a precision tool, not a mould. Expression is part of your identity, and a good result shows in looking rested, not in looking like someone else.

It may make sense if

  • You notice the lines between your brows, on your forehead, or around your eyes starting to show even at rest.
  • People often tell you that you look tired or annoyed when you are not, because of the frown area.
  • You prefer a discreet, reversible intervention, with a progressive, natural result.
  • You want to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming fixed lines over the years.

Neck bands

Softening the vertical cords at the front of the neck.

Platysmal bands, or neck bands, are the vertical cords that appear at the front of the neck, especially when you tense it or talk. They are formed by the platysma, a thin muscle that covers the neck: with age its edges separate and contract more visibly.

Treatment relaxes that muscle with neuromodulators, a medicine a doctor gives in small doses at precise points. As the bands lose tension, the neck looks smoother and the angle between jaw and neck can look sharper.

The effect builds gradually and is temporary. It works well when the muscle is the problem; if loose skin or fat under the chin is the main issue, you will need a different approach, and we will tell you at your consultation.

It may make sense if

  • The vertical cords at the front of your neck bother you.
  • The bands show more when you talk, exercise or tense your neck.
  • You want to improve your neck without surgery or time off.
  • The skin of your neck still has reasonable elasticity.

Nefertiti lift

Defining the line of the jaw and neck.

The Nefertiti lift takes its name from the Egyptian queen known for the line of her jaw and neck. It involves relaxing the platysma, the thin muscle of the neck, along the edge of the jaw and in its bands, with neuromodulators that a doctor gives in small doses.

That muscle pulls the lower face downwards. By reducing its strength, the jawline looks crisper, the neck smoother and the whole area slightly lifted, without surgery and without time off.

It differs from neck band treatment in that it does not only soften the cords of the neck but also aims to define the jawline. It works best when the skin still has some elasticity; with significant laxity, the results are limited.

It may make sense if

  • You feel your jawline has lost definition.
  • Your neck looks less smooth and bands appear when you tense it.
  • You want a subtle contouring effect without surgery.
  • Your skin still has reasonable elasticity.

Asymmetric smile

Balancing the smile when the cause is muscular.

An asymmetric smile is one where one side of the mouth lifts or moves differently from the other. It may be because some muscles on one side pull harder, a difference in volume in the lips or cheeks, a previous facial palsy, or dental and bony causes.

When the cause is muscular, the smile can be balanced by very precisely relaxing the muscle that pulls too much, using neuromodulators, a medicine a doctor gives in small doses. If there is a difference in volume, it is sometimes completed with a small amount of hyaluronic acid.

If the asymmetry comes from the teeth or the bone, treatment belongs to a dentist, an orthodontist or a maxillofacial surgeon, and we will point you in their direction. Our part is the muscle and the volume.

It may make sense if

  • When you smile, one side of your mouth lifts higher or moves differently.
  • You notice the asymmetry in photos and it makes you smile less.
  • You have had a facial palsy and been left with an uneven smile.
  • You want to know whether your case can be improved without surgery.

Safety

Risks of neuromodulators and when we would not recommend them

Mild tenderness, redness or a small bruise at the injection points are common, and some people have a slight headache on the first day. Less often, if the effect reaches a nearby muscle, there can be a temporary droop of the eyelid or brow, an asymmetry or some weakness in the area, which fades as the effect wears off. That is why the dose and the points are decided by a doctor. We do not recommend treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a neuromuscular disorder, an infection in the area or a known allergy to any component.

What are neuromodulators?

Medicines that temporarily reduce the contraction of the muscle they are placed in. In small doses they soften the lines that movement creates without stopping the face from moving. They are what most people mean by anti-wrinkle injections.

Will my face look frozen?

It should not. We work with the lowest dose that softens the line while keeping your expression, and we review the result with you.

When will I see the effect, and how long does it last?

You start to notice it within a few days, it is complete at around two weeks and it usually lasts between three and six months.

Who can give them?

They are prescription medicines, so only a doctor can recommend and give them, after assessing you.
